We wanted to update you on our plans to reopen the theatre school. As it stands, we plan to reopen classes w/c Monday 7th September. Clearly this may change as new advice is released, however, we remain positive and think it is important for us all to have a date to work towards.

The team are working very hard behind the scenes, keeping up with new guidance to ensure that when when we can reopen, we will do so in the safest possible way. Parents will be contacted over the summer regarding plans for each of our venues.

In the meantime, we are having a fantastic summer term running classes over on Zoom. And although we can not run our Theatre Summer School this year, we will soon be launching our ‘Online Summer Workshops’ which the team are very excited about. More details to follow.

Thank you to everyone once again for your continued support.

Stay safe and we can’t wait to see you all again soon!

The Show Must Go ONLINE!

Due to popular demand, Northern Lights Drama has launched a NEW 6 WEEK BLOCK OF ONLINE CLASSES running Monday 15th June – Saturday 24th July with a timetable to work around school hours.

Classes must be booked in advance and places will be offered on a first come first served basis. These classes are open to both new and existing pupils with places being strictly limited.

We would like to thank parents and pupils for their support during this challenging time. We can’t wait to see you all online!

Due to the Government’s new measures against the spread of COVID-19 and concerns raised by parents and guardians, we have taken the tough but pragmatic decision to postpone all classes at Northern Lights Drama with immediate effect. The decision has been taken in the interest of public safety, to help prevent the spread of the virus and to ensure we deliver the highest level of quality that you would expect from our Theatre School.

We will endeavour to keep you updated and we are planning to release free online performance activities for all of our pupils to have access to, continuing our mission to nurture local talent and inspire young people to shine.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to maintaining contact with you and your children throughout this difficult time.

Best wishes,

NLD team x

New Year launch for Saturday Stage School in Swanland will respond to growing local demand

A local independent theatre school which has helped its pupils secure professional roles in international film, television and theatre productions has just announced the launch of more classes to cope with the demand for extra places at their popular theatre school by expanding its scope with a new Saturday Stage School.

Northern Lights Drama (NLD), the now highly respected East Yorkshire based independent theatre school, was established by local actors Hannah Levy and Tilly Oakshott just six years ago in 2013 and now holds 20 classes for over 300 young people each week.

It has rapidly developed a strong reputation with professional theatrical agents and casting directors which has resulted in pupils securing leading roles in Disney and Netflix global TV series, feature films, UK television and theatre, including London West End hit shows as well as TV commercials; although the school emphasises it is equally beneficial for young people looking to develop their confidence and communication skills, make new friends and have lots of fun.

“We are overwhelmed by the success and popularity of Northern Lights Drama, it has far exceeded our expectations,” said NLD Co-founder and Director Hannah Levy. “I think the fact we are independent and can respond to the different needs of individual pupils, local demand and supporting local primary and secondary schools with their curriculum delivery has been the key to our success.

“In addition we’ve been able to use our connections and reputation to help secure professional leading roles for some of our pupils, which is a huge bonus. We are very proud of them all. Setting up a Saturday Stage School has always been our dream since starting the theatre school in 2013.”

Northern Lights Drama says that its local teaching team of industry professionals brings together over 25 years’ experience in nurturing local talent and inspiring young people to shine through their acting, dance and singing training. Success breeds success and they have had to respond by expanding capacity and launching the Saturday Stage School opening in Swanland in the New Year.

“We feel the time is right to provide a more intensive level of training for young performers in East Yorkshire. Our Saturday Stage School will not only expand our capacity but also offer in-depth tuition in acting, dance and singing under one roof each week” says theatre school Director and Co-founder Tilly Oakshott.

“As we go into our sixth year of business, we now have the right team in place, the perfect venue, experience and reputation as a theatre school to be able to deliver a professional and affordable Saturday Stage School, training the next generation,” added Tilly.

The Saturday Stage School will open in January 2020 at Swanland Primary School where Northern Lights Drama already runs a successful after-school Musical Theatre club. Enrolment is now open via the Northern Lights Drama website for children and young people aged 6 – 18 years which includes a free two weeks trial period at the Saturday Stage School: Book Here or email or call 01482 641690

We are extremely proud of BEN AINSWORTH who has only gone and landed himself a series with NETFLIX. Ben is so excited to join the cast of THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR for the second series in The Haunting anthology. Those of you familiar with The Turn of the Screw will have some idea of what he’ll be getting up to in the role of MILES!!! A big GOOD LUCK to Ben – we can’t wait to hear more about this exciting project, expected to debut on Netflix in 2020.

*Ben has been a pupil of Northern Lights Drama Theatre School for the past three years, attending our Acting and LAMDA examination classes, holiday workshops and summer schools. We recognised Ben’s potential and love for performance very early on so with the support from his parents we helped Ben to gain professional representation from leading UK agent Mark Jermin Management (MJM). Over the past two years Ben has appeared in Emmerdale, starred in the Bauli Italia ad campaign for TV, played the part of Benji in ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ on board the Norwegian Epic and William Beech in ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ at the East Riding Theatre. Most recently, Ben has been filming in Vancouver for Walt Disney Pictures’ Flora & Ulysses. Find out more here

We are so excited to announce that our pupil Ben, represented by Mark Jermin Management, will be making his film debut as William in Disney’s ‘Flora & Ulysses’. What an unbelievable achievement – we are so proud of you Ben!

Production has started in Vancouver on Walt Disney Pictures’ Flora & Ulysses, directed by Lena Khan and based on the Newbery Award–winning children’s book, “Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures” by Kate DiCamillo (“Because of Winn-Dixie”, “The Tale of Despereaux”). The film is being produced for the upcoming streaming service Disney+, which launches in the U.S. on November 12th.

Flora & Ulysses tells the story of 10-year-old Flora, an avid comic book fan and a self-avowed cynic, who saves a squirrel she names Ulysses only to have its unique superhero powers wreak havoc in a series of humorous, antic-filled adventures that ultimately change Flora’s life—and her outlook—forever.

Matilda Lawler steps into the role of Flora, marking her film debut. She currently stars on Broadway as Honor Carney in Jez Butterworth’s Tony Award–winning play “The Ferryman,” directed by Sam Mendes. Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother, American Pie) plays Flora’s romance-writer mother, Phyllis, and Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation, Modern Family) plays the role of her world-weary, estranged father, George. Newcomer Benjamin Evans Ainsworth plays the role of William, Flora’s newfound, but annoying, friend, and Danny Pudi (Community, The Tiger Hunter) joins the cast as Miller, an overly zealous animal control officer.

Flora & Ulysses is produced by Academy Award–nominated film producer Gil Netter, and James Powers and Katterli Frauenfelder are the executive producers. The book was adapted for the screen by Brad Copeland (Ferdinand, Wild Hogs). Khan and the producers assembled a talented roster of filmmakers, including director of photography Andrew Dunn (Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Crazy, Stupid, Love.); production designer Michael Fitzgerald (Medal of Honor, The Tiger Hunter); editor Lee Haxall (Always Be My Maybe); and costume designer Mona May (Santa Clarita Diet, Enchanted).

We are delighted to welcome Ben Bailey to the team…

Hi, my name is Ben and I trained at SLP college in Leeds where I received my Level 6 Trinity Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre studies. I have a passion for teaching and seeing, first hand, how good quality training can develop a young person’s skill, technique and confidence as a performer.  I am very excited to be joining the team and can’t wait to work with the school’s talented pupils to produce some great Musical Theatre, Acting and Dance at NLD.

Congratulations to all of our talented pupils who took their LAMDA acting examinations. The results are in and all pupils passed with Merit or Distinction, with marks up to 95/100!!!

A big thank you to our acting teacher, Peter McMillan, who leads the classes. Peter is a professional actor who is able to pass on his knowledge and experience of working in the industry, directing and guiding our pupils through their acting examinations each year.

We deliver LAMDA examination classes in Acting and Musical Theatre for 6-18yrs. To be placed on the waiting list for September 2019 please call 01482 641690, email or go to our LAMDA examination page.

Straight from our social media channels, we present to you our 12 Days of Christmas…

On the first day of Christmas NLD gave to me…

Come along for a FREE taster session and join our #Acting, #MusicalTheatre and #DanceClasses in 2019 🎶🕺🎭

Classes for 3-18yrs and adults across Hull and East Yorkshire. Work with industry professionals to learn new skills, build self confidence and have lots of fun!!!

On the 2nd Day of Christmas NLD gave to me…

A Theatre School Open to All!!!

At Northern Lights Drama Theatre School we do not restrict entry through audition as we see our role as developing everyone, irrespective of whether they wish to pursue a professional career or not; our training can help develop a young person’s confidence and interpersonal skills in addition to acting, singing or dance ability. Those who progress towards professional work in theatre, film and television will be prepared for auditions and a career within the industry. Our classes are designed to aid and develop self esteem and the life skills needed to enable pupils to realise their full potential, at whatever age.

On the 3rd day of Christmas NLD gave to me…

Learn to dance with Tilly, every Saturday in Welton!!!

Led by company director, Tilly, our dance classes for children (6yrs+) are fun, energetic and an opportunity to strut, ‘hair flick’ and feel like a star! Explore different dance styles from commercial to musical theatre, learning choreography to the latest chart topper and hit Broadway shows. A great class for budding performers and those who need a bit of fabulousness in their day.

On the 4th day of Christmas NLD gave to me…

Professional Acting Classes for 7-18yrs!!!

Our Acting Classes for children 7-11yrs and 12-18yrs are led by professional actor, Jessica Duffield, and NLD co-founder, Hannah Levy in #Cottingham (Saturdays) and #Willerby (Thursdays). The classes explore group drama games and exercises, improvisation, devising and script work to help pupils to think on their feet and respond imaginatively to different scenarios. Each pupil is encouraged and supported by industry professionals to become a more confident and well-rounded performer.

We are not a theatre school that constantly churns out productions. From experience we know it is far more useful for pupils to have time to focus on learning new skills and techniques which will enable them to develop as performers.

We will be working towards a spectacular summer showcase performance in June 2019 which family and friends will be invited to attend.

On the 5th day of Christmas NLD gave to me…

NEW Musical Theatre LAMDA examination classes led by professional actor Annie Kirkman, launching January 2019!!!

LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) is one of the UK’s oldest and most respected awarding organisations. The exams are about achievement, recognising and rewarding the endeavours of each individual, but they are also about empowerment. The aim is to provide children with the opportunity to develop the life skills needed for success; attributes such as self-confidence and the ability to communicate and present ideas clearly. We provide LAMDA examination classes in Acting and Musical Theatre for children 6 – 18 years. We are a registered private LAMDA centre which allows our pupils to take their examinations at our school each year.

A little bit more about our new Musical Theatre LAMDA Teacher Annie…

Hi, I’m Annie, I’ve been performing since I was little and have been lucky enough to work all over the world, telling stories on stage. “Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living”, to quote Dr. Seuss, and this is exactly why I love my job.

I trained in Musical Theatre at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in Musical Theatre where I graduated with a First-Class Honours Degree in 2013. Since then, I’ve worked internationally with various companies including LAF in New Zealand and as a part of the Festival of Cabaret in Mexico City.

I’m a founding member of She Productions, company in residence, at the East Riding Theatre and have co-written and performed in shows such as MissCast, Beverley Does Broadway and The StorytEllas. Most recently, I was part of the writing team and cast in our first UK tour, It’s Different for Girls, inspired by Hull 1960’s girl-band Mandy & the Girlfriends.

I can’t wait to join the NLD team in January 2019!

On the 7th day of Christmas NLD gave to me…

Strong relationships with reputable theatrical agents and casting directors!!!

We (Hannah and Tilly, the founders of NLD) are originally from Hull and left the area to train at Drama School, going on to work professionally in theatre, film and television across the UK. We felt strongly that there was a real need for professional training in the region and guidance for those who wanted to work professionally in the industry. After returning to Hull, we decided to launch our own theatre school and founded Northern Lights Drama in 2013.

Since the launch of NLD it has been very important to us, as an independent theatre school and trained actors ourselves, to pass on our knowledge and understanding of the industry to help a select few of our pupils, who have the drive, talent and love for performing, to find professional representation, training opportunities, and work…

For TV, pupils have had feature roles and appearances in ‘Emmerdale’ and ‘Casualty’, commercials and campaigns for ‘Mercedes’, ‘Frubes’, ‘Weetabix’, ‘Motor Depot’ and ‘Bauli Italia’. For Film ‘The More You Ignore Me’. For Theatre ‘Matilda the Musical’ in the West End, ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ on board the Norwegian Epic Cruise-liner, Summer Season at Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre in York, It’s A Wonderful Life’ and ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ at the East Riding Theatre in Beverley, ‘Peter Pan’ at Hull New Theatre, ‘Mercury Fur’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘Aladdin’ for Middle Child Theatre.

On the 11th day of Christmas NLD gave to me…

Acting Classes for Adults with Additional Needs!!!

In our Monday night Acting Class for Adults with Additional Needs we explore story-telling, improvisation, poetry and script work, all in a supportive and inclusive environment, encouraging creativity and openness.

We work at the pace of the individuals in the group, helping them to make new friends and to gain confidence working together.

We consider emotions, and how humans respond to given circumstances, to gain a better insight into social situations and their complexities.

Most importantly, we have lots of fun and develop the ability to work with others to gain the confidence to stand up and perform.

Join us every Monday 6.00 – 7.00pm at Hessle Town Hall. Carers are welcome to attend and all sessions are led by industry professionals who have previous experience of working in special schools and delivering drama workshops for adults with additional needs.
