NEW DRAMA INITIATIVE FOR LOCAL ADULTS WITH ADDITIONAL NEEDS

The well-known power of drama to develop communication and interpersonal skills is being harnessed in a new initiative by an established local theatre school to help adults with additional needs in Hull and East Yorkshire.
Northern Lights Drama Theatre School has announced that it will launch the new acting class next Monday 3 September with a free taster session at Hessle Town Hall from 6.00 – 7.00pm.
“We have received a number of enquiries over the last year from adults with additional needs and their carers who are eager to find an acting class that is right for them,” explained Tilly Oakshott, Director of Northern Lights Drama Theatre School. “Drama is a powerful way to help develop confidence and is not only about acting skills but also brings many additional benefits to the hundreds of children and adults we now teach across the region.”
Northern Lights Drama was established as an independent theatre school in 2013 by local actors Hannah Levy and Tilly Oakshott. Over the past five years they have built a trusted team who use their professional training and experience to provide high quality teaching and support to local talent across the region.
The new class for adults (18+yrs) with additional needs will be delivered by professional actor Jessica Duffield who joined Northern Lights Drama in May this year to lead the theatre school’s acting classes for children and adults in Cottingham and Hessle. Jessica also has a breadth of experience working with children and adults with additional needs, delivering drama workshops in special schools in London, York, Hull and the East Riding.
“Jessica is a valued member of the team” said Hannah Levy, Director of Northern Lights Drama Theatre School. “She is a very talented actor, writer and teacher who read Drama and French with Spanish at Hull University, trained professionally as an actor at Drama Studio London and then went on to gain her PGCE from the University of York.
“When Jessica came on board as a teacher for Northern Lights Drama, we started to discuss the need and demand for an acting class for adults with additional needs in the local community and we are just thrilled to see our plans become a reality.”
Within the new Monday evening session at Hessle Town Hall, pupils will be introduced to new skills and acting techniques in a safe environment that applauds all achievements and encourages play, expression and performance. Accompanying carers are also welcome to attend the classes to ensure the sessions are accessible to all.
“Drama is a powerful tool that can ignite imagination and encourage independent thinking,” said Jessica. “I will lead a professional acting class that will allow pupils to make new friends, build self-confidence and ultimately have lots of fun! I am delighted Hannah and Tilly have introduced this new class to Northern Lights Drama; it reflects their awareness of how this will help adults with additional needs and the commitment of the theatre school to the local community.”
The weekly acting classes for adults (18+yrs) with additional needs will run on a Monday evening 6.00 – 7.00pm at Hessle Town Hall, launching Monday 3rd September 2018. First class is FREE! To book please email info@heynld.co.uk or call 01482 641690.

PROFESSIONAL ACTOR, JESSICA DUFFIELD, TO LEAD CLASSES IN COTTINGHAM

We are so excited to have professional actor Jessica Duffield join the team, leading our Saturday Acting Classes in Cottingham, passing on her expertise knowledge and skills to our pupils…

Hi I’m Jessica and my very earliest performance came at age three, singing a solo of Bobby Shafto! I quickly fell in love with the theatre and performed regularly in pantomimes, school productions and play competitions.

Having successfully auditioned for the National Youth Theatre in 2005, I went on to read Drama and French with Spanish at University, which also included a year living in Paris.

Following my degree, I gained a place at Drama Studio London, where I trained professionally as an actor and was nominated for the BBC Carleton Hobbs Bursary Award for Radio.

Since graduating from Drama School I have toured nationally to theatres such as The Lyric Hammersmith, Nottingham Playhouse, The Yvonne Arnaud, The Criterion and the Tristan Bates Theatre. During my time in London I also worked in various mainstream primary, secondary and special schools across the city.

As a founding member of She Productions Theatre Company, company in residence at East Riding Theatre, Beverley, I have co-written and performed in shows including The Three Kingdoms and The StorytEllas.

In 2016 I completed a PGCE at the University of York and have subsequently taught French, Spanish and Drama at Hymers College, Hull. I also directed a production of Twelfth Night, one of my favourite plays, for the Shakespeare Schools Festival 2017.

I am thrilled to be joining the NLD team!

If you are interested in joining our Cottingham Acting Classes, please come along for a FREE taster session at the Zion Reformed Methodist Church on Hallgate. Join Jessica every Saturday 7-11yrs (10.00am-11.30am) & 12+yrs (11.30am-1.00pm). To book please call 01482 641690, email info@heynld.co.uk or send us a message.

Feature Film Debut for NLD Pupil Eloise Groom

We cannot wait for the cinema release of ‘The More You Ignore Me’ this Friday 6th July. Our talented pupil Eloise Groom plays the part of Young Alice alongside a stellar cast including Sheridan Smith, Mark Addy and Sheila Hancock.

‘The More You Ignore Me’ is a warm comedy drama focusing on the life of an unconventional family in 1980’s rural England, based on the book by Jo Brand and produced by Genesius Pictures. Keith English who directed the film said:

“It’s not often you read scripts as unusual and as good as this one. Jo Brand has used all her insight gained during her years as a psychiatric health worker to create a story that pulls no punches, but makes you laugh and leaves you with a wonderfully positive feeling at the end.”

Don’t miss out and GO SEE!!!

WE WELCOME MICHAELLE TO THE TEAM

We are thrilled to welcome Michaelle to the team who will be leading our Commercial Dance Classes in Welton…

Hi, my name is Michaelle and I am originally from Ecuador. I started dancing from a very young age; this was thanks to my mother who saw I had the potential to dance as I was very flexible and picked up movement quickly. Ballet was my first introduction to dance and I also took up gymnastics, figure ice skating and cheerleading.

My true passion, however, is dance and over the years I have trained in commercial, street dance, folk dance, capoeira, contemporary, salsa, and belly dancing. At the age of 16 I enrolled on the performing arts course at Hull College; taking classes in acting, singing and dance. I then made the decision to pursue a career in dance and studied for my dance degree at Hull College, graduating in 2016.

During my three year course I had the opportunity to participate with East Riding Youth Dance and I also worked with Northern Ballet, exploring the process of teaching children. This experience led me to working with young people, teaching dance and passing on my love and enthusiasm for performance.

I am currently undertaking a yoga teacher training course, which has helped me to gain more knowledge about the human body and the importance of breathing. My yoga training compliments my teaching of dance as I am able to help children to become more flexible, relax, and ultimately help them to believe in themselves and their abilities.

I am extremely excited to be part of the teaching team at Northern Lights Drama and to work with the school’s talented pupils.

Ben Ainsworth to Appear in Emmerdale on ITV

Ben Ainsworth (10), from Lund, will appear as a cheeky schoolboy within a classroom scene in Emmerdale on ITV this Tuesday 17th April.

“This is a great achievement for Ben” said Hannah Levy, Head of Acting at Northern Lights Drama Theatre School. “Ben is a very talented actor and we are extremely proud to have one of our pupils appear in this popular tea time soap.”

Ben joined Northern Lights Drama in 2016 and attends the Theatre School’s Holiday Workshops, Masterclasses and weekly LAMDA Examination Classes in Hessle and Production Club in Beverley.

Ben’s dad, Tim Ainsworth, recognises the contribution Northern Lights Drama Theatre School has made to Ben’s professional development. He said: “I am extremely grateful to the team at Northern Lights Drama for their continued support and belief in Ben. Hannah and Tilly are always there to provide help and advice about working professionally in the industry and Ben wouldn’t have achieved so much without their belief in his talent.”

Northern Lights Drama Theatre School has forged strong relationships with reputable theatrical agents who represent a select number of pupils. Before landing the part in Emmerdale, Ben played the role of Benji in Priscilla Queen of the Desert on board the Norwegian Epic Cruise Liner, sailing across the Mediterranean for six weeks. Ben impressed the producers so much he was then asked to play the part again for a further six weeks in the Caribbean.

Ben is very excited to see himself on television: “I couldn’t believe it when I found out I had got the part and would be in an episode of Emmerdale. The filming was so much fun and I learnt a lot from the experience. I really love to perform and I can’t wait to see the episode on Tuesday.”

Northern Lights Drama Theatre School does not restrict entry through audition as Hannah and Tilly see their role as developing everyone, irrespective of whether they wish to pursue a professional career or not. Tilly Oakshott, Head of Musical Theatre at Northern Lights Drama Theatre School said “Our classes can help develop a young person’s confidence and interpersonal skills in addition to acting, dance or singing ability. Those like Ben who progress towards professional work in theatre, film and television are prepared for auditions and a career within the industry.”

Pupils Perform in ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ in the Carribean

A big GOOD LUCK to twin brothers Conrad and Marcus who have been chosen to perform on board the Norwegian Epic Cruise Liner in the Carribean, sharing the role of Benji in ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’, for six weeks.

Conrad and Marcus are taking over the part from NLD pupils Ben, who played the role over Christmas, and Harrison, who has just finished a six week run of the show. Ben and Harrison loved every minute and we are sure Conrad and Marcus will too #BreakALeg!
